Meeting record student housing demand. Finding more ways for students and university partners to connect with each other in the wake of the pandemic. Identifying new revenue opportunities and upping alternative energy usage.

These are some of the ambitious asks of NMC’s underway Master Planning process. As part of this 10- to 20-year vision for the physical environment of all five campuses, community input is now sought via a survey and public meetings. The first is next week, Wednesday, Dec. 13  from 6–7:30 p.m. at the Great Lakes campus. The second is Wednesday, Jan. 24 on the Front Street campus.

“This is a literal, once-in-a-decade, or even once in a generation, opportunity to reimagine NMC’s future,” said President Nick Nissley. The last master plan was created in 2012. “In this next phase, we look forward to gathering input from the community members the college exists to serve.”

The plan now in formation also dovetails and executes multiple objectives of NMC Next, the college’s strategic plan, adopted in January 2022, including:

  • Increasing online courses, with implications on space utilization, is part of the first goal area, future-focused education.
  • As part of student engagement and success, NMC aims to provide a “vibrant collegiate experience.”
  • As part of institutional distinction and sustainability, NMC aims to find and generate more revenue for certain programs

Troy Kierczynski, NMC vice president of finance and administration, is leading the process which kicked off in May. Input gathered from the survey and the community sessions will be added to an already-completed campus utilization study, facilities assessment, and student and workforce housing analysis.

The planning team will then refine the short and long-term vision for physical campus spaces in order to achieve multiple objectives. Approval from the Board of Trustees is targeted for spring 2024.

The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete and responses are requested by Jan. 12, 2024. The survey link and more information are also available on the Facilities Master Plan webpage.
