Public invited to 9th annual Walk for Health & Housing

TRAVERSE CITY — The community is invited to join NMC students on the ninth annual Walk for Health and Housing, a guided tour of downtown Traverse City from the perspective of people experiencing homelessness and the providers who serve them, departing from NMC's Great Lakes campus parking lot at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Ryan Hannon, leader of Central Outreach, will lead participants on the 90-minute walk. Central Outreach is a hub of services for people without housing in the area, located at Central United Methodist Church, one of the stops on the walk. Other stops will highlight service and volunteering opportunities, including the Government Center, where participants will learn ways citizens can provide input and get involved.

NMC's Great Lakes campus is located at 715 E. Front St., Traverse City. The walk is a part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, happening Nov. 17-24.

Other activities:

  • Large format awareness posters, created by Visual Communications students and highlighting food insecurity, homeless and housing affordability, will be displayed in wall frames in every building on NMC's Front Street campus starting Monday, Nov. 18.
  • Research posters created by sociology students. Locally-focused, the posters share up-to-date information and trends on the problems of housing and food insecurity and also provide innovative solutions. Displayed in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center beginning Dec. 2.

The walk is an example of Experiential Learning at NMC. EL actively engages the learner through relevant and ongoing experiences, critical problem solving and reflective practices.
