The Academy harbor, originally dedicated October 23, 1972, has undergone a total renovation during the fall of 2004 and spring of 2005. Changes in the harbor reflect the additional needs of the T/S State of Michigan and provide better access for the Cadets and public. The harbor has become an extension of our new maritime campus with the stern of the T/S State of Michigan only 150 feet from our building. The large steel structure on the northwest corner or the harbor is the old aftermast from our training ship. This forty foot structure was removed prior to our recent shipyard work on the training ship and will support a large green harbor light. The Great Lakes Maritime Academy Alumni Association provided funding for this light structure and it has been appropriately named "Alumni Light".

The harbor also is a secure area for our smaller vessels. The Maritime Academy Sailing Club operates a fleet of "Flying Scot" sailboats that measure eighteen feet in length and are available for Cadets. Within close proximity are a number of recreational harbors and yacht clubs that organize sailing events throughout the season. Located to the immediate east and west of our harbor are parks with recreational equipment and swimming beaches that are open to the public. The Academy is located in one of the most desirable tourist destinations in the country, and the outdoor recreation opportunities offer possibilities for everyone.
