Physics

Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, and has been said to be the most basic and fundamental science. Challenging our imaginations with concepts like relativity and string theory, it leads to great discoveries — computers and lasers just a couple of these — that truly change our lives.

Increasingly, physicists are turning their talents to molecular biology, biochemistry and biology itself. Even medicine has a niche for physicists, and since medical physicists are hard to come by, they are much in demand.

NMC’s Physics Program courses will help enable you to work in many different and interesting places — in industrial and government labs, on college campuses — perhaps even the astronaut corps. In addition, many physics students leave the lab behind and work in communications, in government, and even on Wall Street — places where their problem-solving abilities and analytical skills are great assets.

Students planning on transferring to complete a bachelor’s degree in Physics will pursue course work which includes credits selected from courses listed here. These students should choose Physics 221, 222, with Calculus I, II, & III, Differential Equations, and General Chemistry I & II.

Fundamentals of Light & lasers

There is a demand nationally for photonics technicians, positions offering high paying careers in manufacturing, health care, environmental monitoring, homeland security, telecommunications, aerospace and other fields.

Light & Laser Fundamentals introduces the elements of a laser, operation of a helium-neon gas laser, laser physics, optical cavities, properties of laser light and a survey of laser systems. Safety procedures concerning lasers and related equipment also are presented in this course.
